If you are interested in the process of writing this is a good book. I am not sure I always agree with her assessments of various writers--Oscar Wilde for example--but Gornick is thoughtful and probing. She speaks with knowledge and experience on one of the most slippery facets of writing: the narrator's voice. This may be one of the very best books on the subject.

It feels disrespectful to offer anything but praise for a book that captured the distance it takes to execute memoir pieces successfully. For writers wrangling with their personal material, trying to turn it into an engaging narrative that along the way may enlighten the reader, this is the premiere text. My purpose was to know what it took and this book describes the process with convincing clarity. What I did not enjoy about the book was its format. It was organized like a text with samples of mostly obscure memoirs and personal essays that the author then critiqued for you. Without having read those works in their original form I had only a cursory interest in her description of the content of those pieces and found myself reading hurriedly to get to the part about technique.When I purchased the book I knew nothing about it and mistakenly expected a discussion of memoir writing without frills. The book was more than that. Without a doubt, I think it is filled with essential information for aspiring memoir writers. If you happen to be an instructor yourself, there are questions you may find useful at the back of the book.

I've read many books on writing, but this is one of the best I've ever read for personal essay and memoir. Gornick really gets to the heart of what we who write from personal experience need to accomplish. It will make you go back and look - again - at your writing and see where you've missed or where you've succeeded. Highly recommend it.

Gornick's obsession is persona, the truth-seeking and truth-speaking narrator and how that partial, constructed self relates to the tale being told. When you try to apply her interesting principles to some works you like, especially if they are very scenic and narrative-driven, it will drive you crazy. Ditto if you are a writer trying to do what she says you should do. But it's fascinating. And she discusses some really interesting essays and memoirs, many of them uncommon or forgotten classics.

I bought this book because Vivian Gornick is an excellent nonfiction writer. It was recommended as a good critique of the process of writing informal personal essays and memoirs. Her discussion of what makes a good personal essay was excellent. How the essay and the memoir are different forms was cogent and insightful I highly recommend this book as one of several which can educate writers on how to go about writing personal, and experiential, pieces.

I have been a student at Stanford University for the last year and one of the teachers recommended this book to me. Reading it for the first time I had the feeling that Ms Gornick wrote it just for me. It was exactly what I needed. So many books about writing just talk about the writer's experiences but this one examines the genre of memoir writing like a doctor at an autopsy. What she writes gave me so many moments where I was saying to myself, yes, that is exactly it. And sometimes she writes things that explain a situation that I had not thought about and seeing it in print gave me that rare gift of true enlightenment

There is the situation, and there is the story, and if you can figure out the basics behind that seemingly innocuous statement, then you can figure out how to be a very effective memoir writer. Only about half of this book is about memoir writing, and I got it specifically for that portion. The essay portion, while fine, did little for me. I would definitely overall recommend this book.

This book was a mandatory read for my MFA - Non Fiction program. I am very happy that it was, because I gained a great deal of insight from reading it.I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about writing quality Non Fiction.

I took a two-semester course on Assembly Language Programming, Digital Logic, and Computer Architecture and this book was amazing. We covered the basics of digital logic (binary, octal, and hexadecimal arithmetic, 1s and 2s complement, Boolean algebra, combinational logic, etc.) the first semester so by the time we got to this book in the second semester, we skipped the first two chapters and most of the third and went straight into adders and flip-flops.The author discusses the organization of A Simple Computer (ASC), but given what little time we had, we were tasked with building a Very Simple Computer (VSC), a primitive 8-bit computer (5-bit memory, 3-bit opcode) capable of performing basic arithmetic. We read just the chapters on combinational circuits, synchronous sequential circuits, organization & programming, hardware design, and memory.The point is that we only used about half the material in the book and we were able to build an 8-bit computer from TTL chips. If you read the thing cover to cover, you'd be able to build a 16- or 32-bit machine no problem. It was a ton of fun and this book was an absolute lifesaver. Together, the book and course fundamentally changed the way I look at computers and I have a much better understanding of how they operate and what's inside them.

Murat Erder is a Director at Deutsche Bank, and is currently working in Data Engineering group as part of the Chief Data Office. Prior to his current role, Murat was the Domain Architect for Reference Data. Before this role he led the Integration Services group at Deutsche Bank responsible for all managed services that dealt with integration; including core messaging, file transfer, ETL, Enterprise Service Bus, Workflow and Document Management. Murat also setup the Technology Standards group at Deutsche Bank and governed adoption of new technologies. Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, Murat worked for 13 years for management consulting organizations, including KPMG/BearingPoint and Deloitte providing architecture and technology strategy advice to leading Financial Services organizations. Murat started his career as a software developer in Silicon Valley and was employed as a Software Development Lifecycle and Object Oriented Analysis and Design specialist by Objectory and Rational. Murat has a MS degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of MassachusettsPierre Pureur is Vice President and Chief Enterprise Architect for Travelers. In his role, Pierre leads the Enterprise Architecture group that includes Application Platform Architecture, Information Architecture, Infrastructure Architecture, Performance Architecture and Security Architecture. Full disclosure, I know both of the authors and not long ago worked for one of the authors for several years. However, before that, I was in a different and large tech company where I worked as a software architect, systems architect or security architect for 20 years. I find that this book is a very good reference for me. It consolidates long standing as well as new ideas for architects. The content is helpful for considering as architects work on large or small activities, big or small teams, XP or Agile, while still trying to apply architectural thinking and decision making to help improve what is being delivered to the customer. No doubt the role of architecture is always changing in IT initiatives in a company. Making sure architects have a range of ideas and options to consider when trying to find the right amount of architecture thinking, artifacts, reviews, etc. for a solution can help us deliver what our stakeholders need. If you already know much of this material, a quick read can refresh your memory or provide a new twist for applying an architectural technique. If you're getting started as an architect, it's a solid reference to keep handy on the bookshelf. And, if you have new ideas you think the book should address, feel free to chime in or contact the authors. The evolving practice of architecture in modern IT environments will always need continuous improvement.

This is a timely book that looks at Software Architecture in the light of the move many companies are making to Agile development. It's a wide-ranging work that examines everything from what we mean by software architecture to what personality traits make a good architect to which tools and methodologies can help architects working with agile teams.The authors contend that as software development moves to agile processes and cloud based environments with a focus on continuous deployment, architecture needs to evolve as well. Their solution is Continuous Architecture that follows six principles:1. Architect Products, not just solutions to projects.2. Focus on Quality Attributes, not on functional requirements.3. Delay design decisions until they are absolutely necessary.4. Architect for change - leverage the power of small.5. Architect for build, test, and deploy.6. Model the organization after the design of the system.The book looks at all phases in which an architect needs to be involved. It starts with a look at gathering requirements including Quality Attribute requirements, then moves on to how to evolve the architecture through the use of prioritization tools and a look at how Architecture and Agile go together. Next the authors look at Continuous Delivery and offer advice on how good design can lead to applications that are easy to quickly build, test, and deploy. Then they look at Validating the Architecture, how that can be done and what tools can help with it. Afterwards is a case study to show examples of the ideas they've presented. And later there are chapters on Enterprise Architecture and one I found particularly interesting on the Role of the Architect and what kind of person makes a good architect.And everything is presented in a spirit of helping the development teams build applications. This is not about theory, it's about getting work done.In the interest of full disclosure I want to note that I work at the same company as Pierre.

Don't waste your money on this. It mainly spews buzzwords and rehashes banalities without offering anything new, insightful, or actionable.

A great perspective on how to architect Agile and Continuous Delivery Projects.As we move away from waterfall and other obsolete and risk prone methods of software delivery, we need to think about how software architecture can coexist with modern methodologies such as SAFE and Extreme Agile. This book provides an excellent, practical and easy to use set of principles and tools that guide practitioners toward designing a new kind of software architecture: one that can be defined and evolved incrementally and continuously across a series of rapid releases. This book is full of new and actionable insights, and the case studies throughout the book are especially helpful. For example, I found the case study described in Chapter 7 very useful.As a side note, the quotes at the beginning of each chapter are both entertaining and thought provoking. This is a great addition to my library!

There is no question that the IT industry is shifting away from traditional enterprise architecture approaches in favor of more agile user centric techniques. Conn Iggulden is a fantastic writer of what is known as fictional history. It is history told as a story, which is far different than the names, dates and places that we learned in school. This story is from the narrative of one of the major characters in the story. That person is Xenophon, who is an Athenian Greek, whose works include the teachings of Socrates. He is a minor character in Part 1 of the book and the major character in Part 2. Conn has taken his writings and created a thrilling novel that will keep you in suspense until its very end.

Bought this as an Amazon recommendation. I'm a big Bernard Cornwell fan and have read all his Sharp and Saxon Tales books. In comparison I found this a bit slow moving. Yes, it's based on a historical event, but I didn't find the characters as compelling as those created by Cornwell. Sorry

I love historical novels from period of Ancient Greece. It has lots of action but most of the book is about the Spartan general Clearchus and the Persian Prince Cyrus with just a little on Xenophon, I still enjoyed it. The author tells the story different from the Anabasis.

So many hero’s in this book that is based on historical events, Conn brings it all alive to the reader. At first you think the book is going to be all about The Persian Prince Cyrus as he struggles against his brother but that is only part of the story.I spent my day to read and finish the whole book and it was worth while.

If you have read Conn Iggulden’s books then I suggest that you pick up this book it won’t disappoint. As I have read Xenophon’s original work(translated) previously. I liked the way the author set the stage prior to the Battle of Cunaxa. The author does a great job with historical fiction.

The book has two distinct stories. Cyrus' tragedy is heart-rending and the resulting plight of the Greeks falls on Xenophon's shoulders. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. I did find myself wishing Haephestus' story had been more fully developed.

This author is amazing! Can’t put the books down that he writes. Well developed characters and intense fight scenes.

I love Conns books but this one was terrible goin by his previous standards. Was a very hard read. will chalk it up.as an off day
