The title of this book is a misnomer. There is no "breakthrough" to be found here. Everything the book covers are basic, tried and true tenants of marketing and sales development that have been codified and refined over decades and, in some cases, generations. The important marketing building blocks of Positioning, Differentiation, Targeting, Personas, and so on are covered, but not in great depth. For instance, in 1981, Al Ries wrote the seminal marketing book: "Positioning - The Battle for Your Mind", which is a nearly 500 page study of just this one concept. In Mr. Diehl's book it's covered in a few pages. However, it is covered quite well.In some cases Mr. Diehl makes simply uninformed statements. For instance on page 76 he talks of a "New phenomenon in marketing called Education Marketing". In fact, companies like John Deere and DeBeers Diamond were doing education marketing 100 years ago. Before the advent of radio advertising most companies utilized long form education marketing because there were not the time constraints of the 30-second broadcast ad. In the last 10 years, education marketing has come back into vogue because people have become so numbed by the overwhelming onslaught of short form advertising they are subjected to, they simply tune it out. “Content Marketing”, which is simply old-school education marketing, is the new marketing buzz-word.Mr. Diehl’s book ranges far-a-field and sometimes seems to lack focus. It covers multiple subjects in marketing and sales and even touches on subjects like executive presence and the importance of a good phone voice. This is not a fault, as I believe the author is just excited to give his audience all the important information he can, but it is a distraction.Here is where the book shines and where I think it’s quite substantial value is: The book is targeted towards young entrepreneurs who, perhaps, lack a formal business education or real entrepreneurial experience. The subjects Mr. Diehl covers are absolutely essential to the success of any entrepreneurial endeavor. Many entrepreneurs get into business because they have an idea and passion, energy and a lot of heart. These attributes will take you far, but I've seen so many young organizations fail, crashing the hopes, dreams and financial fortunes of their founders along with them, simply because there was no knowledge of basic business fundamentals.Brand Identity Breakthrough does an excellent job of introducing some of the most important components of a successful brand development, marketing and sales program. Mastery of these components is central to any company's success. In my 30 year business career I have started 12 companies and I have consulted with many more. I have found that being successful in business is really just a matter of understanding how business works, what its fundamental building blocks are, and the levers you can pull as a manager to accomplish your goals. This book illustrates very well the building blocks surrounding the marketing and sales process. By reading the book, new entrepreneurs will learn about business functions and skillsets that they will desperately require to be successful. Just the knowledge of a proper marketing and sales system will save many businesses from making critical mistakes.Simply put, the book is a very good overview and conceptual primer on many critically important marketing and sales functions. Reading it will help any new entrepreneur immeasurably.Mr. Diehl is a very talented writer, and he is able to illustrate complex ideas in easy to understand, sometimes almost poetic language. He often speaks about the purpose and practice of business in philosophical terms that are evocative and powerful. This is Mr. Diehl’s first book, and, in my opinion, he has the potential to be a very influential and accomplished business writer.Brand Identity Breakthrough is light on actual application and tactical practice. It would be great if the author would follow it up with a more "hands-on" guide to implementing the principles he writes about here. Perhaps that is in the plans, but for now, as an easy-to-read overview of critically important business functions, that can spell the difference between success and failure, the book is spot on and highly valuable.

I must admit to reading this book in a most profoundly "un-entrepreneurial" spirit. The week before I had just closed down a "new" business I had started 9 months before after realizing my fundamental premise was all wrong, that after having a lot of problems concerning existing businesses that made me regret ever bothering with anything. Running your own business is hard. Sometimes it really sucks. While reading this book I started thinking of different ways I might be able to rekindle the entreprenurial zeal that has sadly been kicked out of me by some unfortunate experiences. There are some very important ideas presented that have triggered my brain to want to go back and try again. Maybe if I refocused my brand, tightened the niche, researched a bit more on who my target market really is? I don't know. But I enjoyed reading it, and will keep the book handy in case I decide to take another crack at the business world. Perhaps if I followed the advice in this book I might do a bit better.

Diehl instructs how to reinvent yourself, how to follow trends and find the next idea, then package it so it is embraced by the public. He reminds the reader they should step out of their insular world and really think about what they are selling and why it should matter to someone else. This is a great guide to being a better salesperson, even if your not selling anything. It can be applied to any work situation. There is nothing wrong with self-promotion- what better brand is there than you? I was given a copy of this book voluntarily to read.

This book itself is a breakthrough about brand identity. It has a rare quality, getting you to look at a specific topic and even, remarkably, all of life through new perspectives. I am grateful to Gregory for writing this book. I come with some context having an MBA in my past and have read my fair share of business books. This is an excellent book, in tune with modern unfolding ways of understanding business.The communication is crystal clear.I can also see from the insights he offers about the nature of how people are and function that he has been on a great journey of personal expansion. Born in Los Angeles to Mexican parents, Erica Garza has spent most of her adult life traveling and living abroad. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter. I stumbled upon this book and was impressed by her interview with Megyn Kelly. It takes tremendous courage to expose sex and love addiction.But for me it was a bit too much of drama after drama and never ending story of suffering. At a certain point I felt like I had enough of the same old story over and over. And yes this part of addiction but I something fell flat and lacked a depth. But she is truly brave to take on this subject.

I commend the author for a well written memoir. Her writing was very in-depth and revealed that she did a lot of soul searching and self exploration to understand her affliction and the impact it was having on her life. However, as a non addict it was difficult to fully comprehend the association of her innermost feelings of unworthiness with porn addiction and a myriad of self destructive sexual encounters. To my ignorant mind those 2 are are not equatable.It was also very difficult for the reader to sympathize with the author, who made it very clear she is not looking for sympathy, pity or even empathy for that matter. Her self destructive part was difficult to read,since in her newfound clarity she decided to lay it all bare on the pages of her book without any evidence she had any inclination of insight into her issues. It seems a little unbelievable that you can go soo many years without either yourself or someone else trying to offer some clarity or direction in your life.She did minimize the role that her immediate family played in her addiction, which given the circumstances would have to be a purposeful omission. Unfortunately in her eventual soul searching, the responsibility of a 12 year old lies within the realm of the home and by extension, your parents.I did find the book a bit tiresome but I still think it is a very good read and gave it 4 stars. I would recommend it to anyone like myself, ignorant on the concept of sex addiction since it offers a brief introduction into this fairly well established concept.

Erica Garza is very impressive in that she has learned so much about herself without having had a committed mentor who had unwavering faith in her ability to find a healthy way to meet her needs. The book is about confusing sex with love, which mostly felt empty, and then being brave enough to stay with her emptiness and other feelings until she figured out that she needed to forgive and love herself in order to love others and create a more fulfilling life. Bravo!

Loved this book and feel a little less alone after reading it. Been searching for a book from a woman’s perspective on being a sex addict and it’s finally here. I devoured this book. Thank you Erica for the courage to tell your story you have helped me in ways you’ll never know.

This book is a very "dry read". If you're forced to purchase it for a course, buy it used! Also, make sure you have plenty of coffee ready and are not at all tired - because you will fall asleep while reading it. Reading case briefs, appeals, and legislative bills are - depending upon the topic - more interesting than this book. You may find that you'll get more out of the covered topics by doing the skim reading technique as there are many places where the author seems to use extra filler info that makes it redundant. Also, the author shows - in several places throughout - bias toward one particular political party over another. The author's unnecessary descriptive words within sentences point to such bias - you'll have to look past the bias, not let it infuriate you and do some searching on your own to find the truth. Definitely NOT worth buying new. Buy a good-used condition one instead. Otherwise, you'll wish you hadn't wasted so much money on the book. Yes, you can probably get it as an E-book; but, some parts of it are good for a future reference in another course.

This is typically a dry subject, however the author has done much to bring the subject to life, using real life examples and developing active models for implementation. I was pleasantly surprised because I had foreseen endless nights of poring over typical academic drivel, yet this text was well developed, researched and presented. Alison Lurie has written a book, "The Language of Houses", on a subject that nearly everyone has an opinion - the way we see both "personal" architecture (our homes) and "public" architecture (the other buildings we encounter in our lives). It is an interesting, if not a bit bland, look at architecture.I really think we all have reactions to the spaces we're in - either temporarily (a public building or another person's home) or more lengthy (our own homes). Mostly these feelings are transient - we either like and feel comfortable in the space we're in...or we don't. And if we don't, we often try to leave as soon as possible. This was an important "jumping off point" for me when I began this book, and I read the entire book without receiving much in the way of that, despite the book's subtitle: "How Buildings Speak to Us".Ms Lurie does an excellent job at looking at the history of buildings and how they're constructed. She covers home styles as they've evolved from one room domains to modern homes with a room for everybody in the family. But she doesn't say much about how these homes affect the families that live within. I'm a compulsive viewer of house plans and love to consider how I could use the house as a home, while also thinking about how others could use it. Lurie writes a bit on how the modern home has moved from being filled with smallish rooms into designs with a lot of open spaces - the country kitchen, the second floor that opens up over the first floor, etc. She also examines how public buildings have evolved.Okay, one thing a decent reviewer of a book should NOT do is to bemoan what the author does NOT include in her book. And that's what I'm doing here. I would have loved for more opinions from Ms Lurie; I wanted some "spice". I'd have liked to see her flay those architects (and the committees who approved their designs) for buildings like Daniel Libeskind's Jewish Museum in Berlin which is a completely unusable home for a museum. Now, again, that's MY - violent - opinion. Many people love that building.So Alison Lurie has written a very good book about this history of our buildings. It's interesting reading and can heartily recommend it to the reader who wants the facts without the opinions.

I found The Language of Houses fascinating. I’d never realized how many powerful or subtle messages can be conveyed by varieties of rooms, arrangements within them, and by the surrounding whole of the structure. I was especially taken with Ms. Lurie’s repeated invoking of sociological and psychological issues relating to status, a factor of life we don’t often talk of directly today in our supposed classless society. Ms. Lurie shows us that the environments we create speak truths we hesitate to admit in words. I have read all of Alison Lurie’s novels and I find her clear and direct non-fiction style – enlivened further with satisfyingly humorous asides to the reader – presents her font of ideas and well-researched facts in as stimulating (or else soothing) a manner as descriptions of atmospheres, characters and characters’ motives in her novels. The Language of Houses well met my standard of a good read in non-fiction: encouraging me to look at things around me in a new way, to think of things I hadn’t before.

Fascinating. points up how we build a home, city, village state so reflects our insides, and we may not know we are signaling who we really are.

A long string of vapid, insipid glittering generalities, undermined by charged language. Save your money and avoid this embarrassment of meaningless froth.

Great gift!!

I rarely pass up the opportunity to read a book or article about residential architecture and what it reveals about our culture. I read and enjoyed Bill Bryson's "At Home", Witold Rybczynski's "Home", and Tracy Kidder's "House", but my favorite has always been Christopher Alexander et al.'s "A Pattern Language". If only Alison Lurie's "The Language of Houses" had any of the insight or power of observation of these excellent books. I read it in one sitting, paging through the chapters looking in vain for a single remark that went beyond the obvious. Very disappointing.
